KING’S WAR by Jill Williamson is the conclusion to the Kinsman Chronicles—which is a prequel series to one of my favorite fantasy series! This sweeping epic fantasy novel takes place in the land of Er’Rets (which made me super happy, because I love the Blood of Kings Trilogy. ;)).

The first book in the Kinsman Chronicles, KING’S FOLLY, was good—if rather dark for my taste; but I adored some of the characters and it was exciting.

The second book, KING’S BLOOD (man, I should have known from that title…), got way too dark for me and left me utterly devastated over a character death I still haven’t recovered from over a year later. *cough* I was kiiinda disappointed—and therefore worried about the next one.

However, I’m thrilled to say that KING’S WAR, book 3, was the best of the trilogy, and I really enjoyed it!

I particularly loved how it took place in the same land as the Achan books (as I call them), and how it started linking up to so many things that I knew from that world! Names, places, history, cultures, magic, etc. And the “feel” was much more like the epic fantasy that I enjoy, and less of the darkness and grittiness of the first two books. (There’s still grittiness in this one, but it’s just much more enjoyable otherwise, somehow. XD)

There were several months between my reading the second book and this one, so it did take me a little while to pick up all the threads and characters—I’m pretty sure there are still a few things that I never quite remembered. XD But once I got back into it, I was sucked completely into this fantasy world and its wonders and politics and characters’ adventures.

I loved the writing. Some of it was funny. The characters were enjoyable (other than the ones we properly loathe. :P). I was surprised by new and different things, and felt at home with familiar ones. It was huge, but pretty worth it in the end. ^_^

Particularly those characters I mentioned. 😉 A certain happening from book two is still very much Not Okay. But I was able to get over it and enjoy the story all the same. 😛

I still love Kalenek, and Trevn—usually. XD Oli as well, and his character arc, which was fantastic. I started liking Grayson more—he really does a lot in this one. And Hinck—who I never really cared as much about as I might have for some reason—I finally decided was pretty cool! One of my absolute favorite scenes featured him and Princess Saria (also a cool character) in a library and just YES. I loved it! 😀

I also loved all the veil stuff and the bloodvoicing and doing all the excitement around the castle. ^_^ So exciting! I remember being a little unsure about some of the conclusions, and it still is a little more gritty/adult at times, but not as much as the previous two books. On the whole, it was a great book, and they fight giants and against evil, and there’s epic battles and basically it’s a thrilling adventure. 😀

Overall, it’s rather long, and you have to get through a lot of long, dark pages to get to it, what with the two previous books (though they had their good moments too!). But if you do, it’s well worth reading this one—especially if you’re a fan of Blood of Kings. Another excellent read from Jill Williamson!

Now excuse me while I go put BY DARKNESS HID and its two sequels on my TBR for a long-overdue re-read…

In Bookish News: July 2018

Hi everyone!

Just popping in for a quick post about the book releases and other awesomely bookish things going on this month. 🙂

JULY RELEASES

Here are some books which look like they’ll be awesome. 😀 (And I can’t get over how pretty the covers are together. AWK. So much shiny!)

• The Green Princess series, book 1: Flower – H. L. Burke — (Okay, this was actually June 30th, but close enough, and I didn’t have it in last month’s post.) Because an adorable YA fantasy romance with a heroine who has plant powers sounds super fun. I’m curious to try this one!
• Healers and Warriors – Daley Downing — (Similar story; just came out! EEE!) I enjoyed the first two books immensely, so I’m excited to try the third book in this series involving modern times and fae and cats and all that fun stuff. 😉
• The Janus Elixir – Kyle Robert Shultz (July 1) — I actually read this already (as an editor) and it’s so good! I’m not even biased, I promise. I’m just excited to have a whole novella told by Malcolm Blackfire, dragon and archaeologist. 😀 It’s super funny, features Malcolm and his… er… assistant Melody Nightingale, and is set in an alternate 1816 London, with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, some characters from mythology, and some other familiar names… You’ll just have to check it out, because it’s a blast. XD And it’s free if you sign up for the author’s newsletter. 😉
• Renegade Skyfarer – R. J. Metcalf (July 1) — I haven’t read this but I have it on good authority that it’s amazing, and it certainly SOUNDS like it is, because steampunkery and awesomeness. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!
• Launch – Jason C. Joyner (July 3) — I don’t know a lot about this one but it’s a superhero story I’ve seen some friends sharing and I think it’s a YA Christian fantasy superhero book, which sounds intriguing!
• Fawkes – Nadine Brandes (July 10) — Alternate historical fantasy version of the Fifth of November Guy Fawkes incident? I’m sold!
• Escape and Endurance – Sarah Holman (July 15) — Another addition to the delightful Kingdom Adventure series, Tales of Taelis! These books make my heart happy and I can’t wait to read this one. ^_^ Also THAT COVER. ❤ It’s up for pre-order. (It’s book 5 in the series, but they always stand alone!)
• The Hound of Duville – Kyle Robert Shultz — (Not pictured because it’s not on Goodreads yet and I’m lazy.) The Brothers Beasley (Nick and Crispin) are back (I MISSED THEMMM) and hilarious as ever, in an alternate 1920s London with some magical mishaps as they solve a case involving… well… you’ll just have to read it. But there’s lots of dogs. And hilarity! XD And FEELS. O_O And it’s so good! 😀 (I may have edited this one too. *cough*)

OTHER BOOKISH HAPPENINGS

The Realm Makers writer conference is happening, so I might be less bloggy than usual, getting ready for and then attending that. I’m really excited! (And if you’re going, give me a shout so we can meet! :D)

I know this is very localized, so I apologize if it doesn’t apply to you, but thought I’d share anyway. If you are, or know anybody, in the St. Louis, MO area, there’s going to be a Book Festival as part of the Realm Makers conference, and on Saturday, July 21, the book festival part is open to the public! So you can check that out here. 🙂

The Fellowship of Fantasy’s neat Summer Reading Quest is still going, and it’s not too late to join! Readers of all ages can join in and read books and earn rewards and it’s basically awesome. ^_^ (Not that I’ve been keeping up with it because so much busy right now. *cough*) (And, yes, here’s the link for older readers. ;))

EDITED TO ADD: The Electrical Menagerie, which I loved, is the book of the month for the Fellowship of Fantasy bookclub, so there’s no better time to join in on this fun group, if you do the Facebook thing, than now! 😀 Because you need Carthage and Huxley in your life. You just do.

JUNE BOOK RELEASES

Like I did last month, I thought I’d share a list of books releasing this month, because ALL THE BOOKS are coming out right now! (Like… literally all of them. O_O)

• Kate’s Dilemma – Sarah Holman — (June 1) I love the Kate’s Case Files series, so I was excited for this third book! 🙂 I loved it. ^_^ (Read my review.)
• The Stealthmaster’s Shadow – Hope Ann — (June 1) An epic, snarky hero, and a Twelve Dancing Princesses retelling… 😀 Also loved! (Read my review.)
• Song of Leira – Gillian Bronte Adams — (June 5) It’s the final book in the trilogy and I’m. so. excited. O_O I’ll be sharing more about it on Tuesday, and you can watch for my review coming soon! ^_^
• A Thousand Perfect Notes – C. G. Drews — (June 7) The book itself doesn’t sound like it’s quiiite my cup of tea, but I’m excited for Cait who’s getting published! 🙂
• The Electrical Menagerie – Mollie E. Reeder — (June 9) AAHH. I just read this one and it was SO good. *collapses* Steampunk and a buddy story and just… it was AMAZING and so much fun! I recommend it highly and hopefully will share a review soonish. BUT JUST READ IT ALREADY. (Or… y’know… when it comes out, since I read an advance reader copy I won. *cough*)
• Lightporter – C. B. Cook — (June 16) Gaah, I’ve been excited for this since Twinepathy! Superheroes and awesomeness. And it’s almost here!
• King’s War – Jill Williamson — (June 19) The final Kinsman Chronicles book and I’M NOT READY — aaahh! It’s so thick and gorgeous though and I’m looking forward to reading it!
• The Orphan’s Wish – Melanie Dickerson — (June 26) I’m curious what an Aladdin story in the continuing Hagenheim series is going to be like! 🙂

OTHER BOOKWYRMERY

I’ll be part of the blog tours for Song of Leira and Lightporter, so watch for those. I can’t wait!

And hopefully I’ll have a few other reviews to share, as well.

Another book that came out recently (but which wasn’t listed in the May Bookish News post, so I’m posting it here so it doesn’t slip through the cracks) is Horseman by Kyle Robert Shultz! You can read my review of sorts here, but basically it’s a hilarious wild-west magical kind of adventure and is so much fun. I also may have been an editor for it, so… you know. There’s that. 😉

The third book in the series that began with Masters and Beginners has a cover! I love it and I’m excited. 😀

Hannah Williams just revealed her debut novella releasing in August and I’M SO EXCITED AAH.

June 22: Jill Williamson and Gillian Bronte Adams are having a joint FB party to celebrate the release of Song of Leira and King’s War. I’m so excited!

June 15: Speaking of parties on Facebook, if you’re into those, here’s another one. (Because H. L. Burke and Janeen Ippolito are fun.)

And another VERY awesome thing is the Summer Reading Quest put on by the Fellowship of Fantasy! If you know (or are…) a kid who loves reading fantasy, there’s an epic summer reading challenge with prizes and stuff, for readers under 18 I think. Spread the word! I know I’d have LOVED doing something like this a few years ago. ^_^

Oh, and there’s a less-in-depth, but-still-awesome, side version of that for those of us who are technically “adults” even if we’re young at heart! 😉 So check that out.

The Summer Reading Quest started just a couple of days ago at the start of June, and it’s going to run through August, so there’s time to get involved and read all kinds of wonderful fantasy.

Fantasy Month Plans/Nightstand Books

Behold my hoped-for nightstand reads for February is Fantasy Month! (Rolling two different Jenelle-Schmidt-themed things into one since she and DJ Edwardson came up with Nightstand Books? XD)

These are the (visible) fantasy books I hope to try to read this month… mostly fantasy. 😉 Not pictured are a few beta-reads I must read (exciting! But not very photographable! XD). And I’m reading a Jane Austen (Mansfield Park, being the last one I haven’t read) because reasons.

• King’s Blood — I’m reading this one for review and JUST LOOK AT ITS GORGEOUSNESS. AND ENORMITY. I may be at this one for awhile. XD It’s big enough that I’m trying not to be too ambitious for my other reading this month. o.o
• The Firethorn Crown — The Fellowship of Fantasy is reading this one this month as a book club read and it’s the perfect excuse for me to finally read the gorgeous copy I won last year and didn’t get around to reading. (#fail) But it’s a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses so I’m excited. 😀
• Howl’s Moving Castle — Speaking of book clubs, the Goodreads Diana Wynne Jones Fans group is reading HMC this month for a Valentine-ish read, and I need no excuse to reread one of my top two favorite books. ❤
• Mixed Magics — I’m re-reading (aloud) my way through the Chrestomanci series, and this one’s next. Going to be fun. 🙂 This series is even MORE amazing on reread!

Posting Plans for February

Sometimes I’m entirely planned out and have aaall my posts either ready or at least planned.

And then there are the other times.

This is one of those other times. 😉

But hey, let’s roll with it! I have no concrete plans for the month, but I hope to share a few fantasy book reviews throughout the month (if I can actually get around to writing them… >.>) and I may do a fantasy-ish tag thingamy. I don’t know! But hopefully some fun, regardless. 🙂

Fantasy Etc. Scavenger Hunt (Jill Williamson)

Also! There’s a fun (and mostly fantasy) scavenger hunt later this month that Jill Williamson and some other authors are holding to celebrate the release of King’s Blood — so you simply must mark your calendars for February 17-19 because it looks like so much fun.

(I mean, look how the USA and Europe are on there… and the space stations to the sci-fi books appear to be in Florida and Russia(?) like in real life, and Leira (from Orphan’s Song and Songkeeper) is by a desert, and just… it’s brilliant okay and I love it and can’t wait, so I had to mention it. XD

Top Ten(ish…okay 24) Books Releasing 2017!

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) is “Top Ten 2017 Debuts I’m Excited For” which I, in my rebel state, am tweaking to any and all 2017 releases (not just debuts) and am also expanding on the number… (Okay, so it’s 24. I never said I was good with maths.)

But I’m personally pretty excited because although I’ve read much of his various Beren and Luthien drafts, I think it will be cool to see the different versions altogether. Plus, illustrated = win. ALSO: shoutout because it’s Tolkien’s birthday today! Happy birthday!
  
• The Noble Servant (Thornbeck Forest #3) – Melanie Dickerson (May 9): Final book in the trilogy after The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest and The Beautiful Pretender, this historical fiction, Christian romance fairytale retelling of The Goose Girl/The Prince and the Pauper has me pretty excited to read it. It’s about Magdalen from The Beautiful Pretender and I can’t wait.

• Exiles (Ilyon Chronicles #4) – Jaye L. Knight: I know, I haven’t gotten this far in this Christian Fantasy series yet. Still, it wanted to be in this post. *shrug*
  
• The Reluctant Godfather – Allison Tebo: Retelling of Cinderella with “a young and cantankerous fairy godfather” — sounds amusing and delightful.
• Untitled (Penderwicks #5) – Jeanne Birdsall: This one’s been listed for 2017 for aaages, so we’ll see if it happens. I NEED ANOTHER PENDERWICK BOOK. Even though I’m terrified too because the kids are like grown up and it’s the last book and eek.
  
• Untitled (Jackaby #4) – William Ritter: Curious about the last Jackaby book, since Ghostly Echoes cliffhangered… Maybe there will be some answers about Jackaby, and he’ll hopefully continue with his awesome banter in another intriguing historical fantasy mystery?
  
• Untitled (Stolen Crowns #1) – Jessica Day George: I’ve been looking forward to this one since… ages ago. Fantasy “sequel” of sorts, following up various fairytales, about their children… I think. Anyway, fairytales by Jessica Day George and I want ’em.

• Songkeeper Chronicles #3 – Gillian Bronte Adams: Fantasy, final book in the trilogy, after Ophan’s Song and Songkeeper — I’m soooo looking forward to seeing how this series wraps up!!!
• Minstrel’s Call (The Minstrel’s Song #4) – Jenelle Leanne Schmidt: Final book in this awesome fantasy series (King’s Warrior, Second Son, and Yorien’s Hand) — can’t wait! Dragons and epic fantasy, preciousss.
  
• Modern Tales of Na Fianna #3 – Hazel B. West: Be still my beating heart. There’s going to be another book after Blood Ties and An Earthly King. CALENDAR, BE KIND TO ME AND MOVE THE YEAR QUICKLY TO THIS DATE, WHENEVER IT MAY BE.
  
• A Different Kind of Purpose (A Different Kind of Courage #2) – Sarah Holman: Another Revolutionary War book, I’m really looking forward to this sequel to A Different Kind of Courage to see William get into (and hopefully out of) his next noodle.
  
• Suit and Suitability – Kelsey Bryant: 1930s retelling of Sense and Sensibility, by a lovely author I know, I’m very much looking forward to this one! I just know it’s going to be lovely.
  
• Emmeline – Sarah Holman: Also a 1930s retelling, of Jane Austen’s Emma, I was privileged to beta-read this last year and ADORED it, so I’m very excited for it to release! (Along with the rest of this Vintage Jane Austen 1930s retellings series by various authors. Methinks they’ll be fun. ^_^)

• Silver Rose – Shantelle Mary Hannu: Don’t know if this Christian Fantasy novel will see publication this year, but if it does I’M GOING TO BE ONE EXCITED FANGIRL. This book is one of my favorites and I can’t wait to see it in print! *flailing*
• The Last Motley – DJ Edwardson: Again, not sure if it’ll be this year or not, but I’m quite excited for DJ’s hopefully-upcoming fantasy novel! I just know it’s going to be amazing. *flails because fantasy*
• Lightporter (IDIA #2) – C.B. Cook: I honestly have no clue if this contemporary superhero tale (sequel to Twinepathy) is in the forecast for this year. But I hope it will be. Because Blaze and Anvil and company are awesome and I’m selfish and want to read about  them ASAP they NEED this sequel because they need more screen page time.

Now all I need is more time/resources to acquire and read these books. XD (Not to mention more bookshelf space. Seriously.) #bookwormproblems
