Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

Have another belated review from a couple of March Magics ago. XD

Title: Guards! Guards!

Author: Terry Pratchett

review

This is less of a review, and more of a things-and-thoughts-about-the-book sort of affair.

I read this one a bit belatedly for March Magics—my first Pratchett novel. People say his books are reminiscent of DWJ, and there is a reason, namely: hilarious fantasy. (I still prefer hers, but he can be fun.)

It’s hilarious and a mess and doesn’t take itself seriously, and is basically a fun rollick. XD It takes SO MANY fantasy tropes and turns them on their heads. It has footnotes. (And one of its footnotes had footnotes.) Any book that has as detailed a thing about libraries on page three as this one has is bound to be great. (Also, the librarian is an orangutan. Because it can.)

The blurb (at least the one I read) seems to act like the book is about Carrot, but it’s really about Vimes. Captain Vimes is the LAST person you’d think of as a hero or even as Main Character material. He’s the most unlikely hero imaginable. But I surprised myself by realizing by the end that I absolutely loved him! XD He’s great.

Anyway, it follows the Night Watch of the city of Ankh-Morpork, a few down-on their luck, scrapings-of-the-gutter fellows. Captain Vimes, Sergeant Colon, Nobby, and Carrot. There’s also Lady Ramkin, who is interesting; the Patrician, who is creepy; and the little dragon named Errol!! (My favorite quote about Errol: “He’d eaten most of the table, the grate, the coal scuttle, several lamps and the squeaky rubber hippo.”)

You can’t really describe the PLOT, as such… there’s just a lot of stuff going on. There’s the Watch, and shenanigans, and it’s fun. 😀

Also, silly names like the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night. And helmet plumes. Also: dragons! And there’s a dash of timey-wimey to spice things up. The thing about the lost heirs!! (I kind of wish it might have turned out a little different about that character… but I don’t know if he’d have wanted that anyway, so I dunno.) There’s a bit of language/rude jokes, but still. I loved the thing about “a million to one chance but it just might work” and how people never say “it’s a certainty but it just might work”. XD There were also some brilliant things about dungeons (never build one you can’t escape from). And, of course, how people in books tend to yell “Guards! Guards!” — because they really do.

There are no chapters, just scene breaks, so it feels like a movie. This also makes it impossible to stop reading, which is awkward for those of us who need to remember to go sleep sometime.

Anyway, I enjoyed it a good deal, and this and “Mort” are probably still my favorite Pratchett books. 😀 I’ll have to try some more with the Night Watch sometime…

Some Favorite Quotes

“set a deep hole with spring-loaded sides, tripwires, whirling knife blades driven by water power, broken glass and scorpions, to catch a thief”

***

There is an art in throwing knives and, even then, you need the right kind of knife. Otherwise it does just what this one did, which is miss completely.

***

It was said that, since vast amounts of magic can seriously distort the mundane world, the Library did not obey the normal rules of space and time. It was said that it went on /forever/. It was said that you could wander for days among the distant shelves, that there were lost tribes of research students somewhere in there, that strange things lurked in forgotten alcoves and were preyed on by other things that were even stranger.*

Wise students in search of more distant volumes took care to leave chalk marks on the shelves as they roamed deeper into the fusty darkness, and told friends to come looking for them if they weren’t back by supper.

*All this was untrue. The truth is that even big collections of ordinary books distort space, as can readily be proved by anyone who has been around a really old-fashioned secondhand bookshop, one of those that look as though they were designed by M. Escher on a bad day and has more staircases than storeys and those rows of shelves which end in little doors that are surely too small for a full-sized human to enter. The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read.

***

A couple of guards grabbed Vimes tentatively by the shoulders.

“You’re not going to do anything heroic, are you?” whispered one of them.

“Wouldn’t know where to start,” he said.

***

“Do you think picking someone up by their ankles and bouncing their head on the floor comes under the heading of Striking a Superior Officer?”

***

What would Captain Vimes do now? Well, he’d have a drink. But if he didn’t have a drink, what would he do?

“What we need,” he said slowly, “is a Plan.”

That sounded good. That sentence alone sounded worth the pay. If you had a Plan, you were halfway there.

***

“Oook,” the Librarian pointed out, patiently.

“What? Oh. Sorry.” Vimes lowered the ape, who wisely didn’t make an issue of it because a man angry enough to lift 300lbs of orangutan without noticing is a man with too much on his mind.

***

Fortunately, the chances of anyone surviving the ensuing explosion were exactly a million-to-one.

Reading Roundup #4: April 2016

ReadingRoundup2

“So… I remember part #1, but where is part #2 and #3?” you ask.

Ahem. Do not question.

I have not had internet much in the last… er… three weeks? and therefore have not been blogging, and I happen to feel like writing this short post but not those two (Feb. and March) just now… BUT I’M LEAVING ROOM IN CASE I GET TO IT. Yes.

So! My reading of April. Which… incidentally was VERY FEW. To be fair, though, one of them was ENORMOUS (looking at you, King’s Folly. 😉 ) and took me two weeks to read, which kind of adds up.

5starrating

Rather than posting it four times, I… am arbitrarily sticking this 5 star image here and saying all the books I read this month were 5 stars. I don’t know if it’s, strictly speaking, true… I tend to have trouble with such things soon after reading. *shifty eyes* I think I originally rated Guards! Guards! 4 stars, but I don’t know if I liked it less than the other three I read this month, and I enjoyed it possibly the most because it was so funny? I dunno. My whole rating system is a mess. XD

TalesMoomin

1. Tales from Moominvalley – Tove Jansson

The last of the Moomin books I currently have (many thanks to my awesome cousin!) this one was a collection of Moomin short stories, which were SO fun! I loved them. ❤ (Especially the ones about Snufkin. I may need to do a whole post about Snufkin, or at least about the books I’ve read so far, because he’s such a great character!) Anyways the stories were all cute/awesome, some more than others, and I just kinda adored this book. ^_^

GuardsGuards

2. Guards! Guards! – Terry Pratchett

I read this as a belated part of March Magics… My first ever Terry Pratchett book! Yes, I’m slightly addicted… I’ll definitely have to try some more of his books. 🙂 It’s technically “adult” and had a bit of language/rudeness, but mostly it was really good, and I simply LOVED all the humor and bizarre hilarity of all the fantasy tropes being flipped on their heads and… basically I could quote it all day (if it wasn’t a library book and already gone back…) and laughed a lot and it was so so so much fun. Huge thanks to Sarah for recommending it, and to March Magics for actually helping me get around to reading a Pratchett! I have hopes of perhaps reviewing it… I did in fact make notes for a review before having to send it back to the library so PERHAPS this shall happen…

SONGKEEPER-FRONT-COVER

3. Songkeeper – Gillian Bronte Adams

Oh my. The much-anticipated sequel to Orphan’s Song was INTENSE, I tell you!! I reviewed it on my other blog… This book, though! ❤ And all my favorite characters returning from Orphan’s Song… Suffice to say it was really good, if dark, and I’m really looking forward to book 3! EEK! 😀

KingsFolly

4. King’s Folly – Jill Williamson

Also intense and GINORMOUS and epic and… kinda dark, yes (I’m noticing a trend?) and basically I’m so happy to have Jill fantasy again and I love aaaall the characters. I’m also super super happy that I don’t have to wait a full year for the next book to come out, since it’s coming out in December. THIS IS GLORIOUS NEWS. I need it ASAP. I also reviewed this one on my other blog.

***

So that was what I read in April! All really good, and a very ODD collection of books… o.o But, ya know, that’s not surprising for me. 😉

Have you read any of these, or do they sound interesting? How was your April reading? 🙂

Stands of Night {April 2016}

First Wednesday of the month means it’s time for Nightstand Books, a monthly meme of what-we’re-reading, hosted by Jenelle Schmidt and D.J. Edwardson. (Jenelle called her post today “Stands of Night,” which I honestly didn’t understand for a second, and then I decided to steal it because I LOVE that. XD)

So without further ado, my nightstand this month…

nightstand2016april

  • Tales from Moominvalley by Tove Jansson – I actually just finished this one, the last of the Moomin books I currently own. This one was a collection of short stories (read aloud, of course!) and oh! Such a delight! ^_^ My favorite was called The Last Dragon in the World and featured one of my favorite friendships i.e. Snufkin and Moomintroll. THEY ARE SO AWESOME AND ADORBZ. Snufkin is like my favorite character ever and he was MAGNIFICENT in this one! ❤ I love him so much. LINK: {on Goodreads}
  • Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett – Leftover from March Magics, I’m determined to get this read before it returns to the library! I started it last night, made the belated discovery that there are no chapters, and promptly stayed up till 2 a.m. before I had the willpower to put it down… (Which is bad, given that I have a cold and should have been asleep! Ahem.) But so far it’s HILARIOUS and doesn’t take itself seriously and has FOOTNOTES (and one of the footnotes had footnotes! *flails*) and it subverts so many fantasy tropes… Anyways I’m having fun with it. 🙂 LINK: {on Goodreads}
  • King’s Folly by Jill Williamson – I’m going to start this monster of a book shortly… I’m very excited! ISN’T IT PRETTY?? I got this for review from Bethany House so I was SO ecstatic when it showed up in the mail a few days ago! Also, the book actually released yesterday! Check out Jill’s post on it and enter the giveaway for a signed copy! ^_^ I’m slightly nervous to read it because it’s technically for adults and people say it’s dark, but I’m also extremely excited because Jill is an incredible writer and I’ve missed her writing fantasy so it’s awesome that this one’s out now! Anyways I’ll hopefully have it read and reviewed within the month. *fingers crossed because I actually have a review deadline and this book is so enormous and I may die. Ahem* (BUT IT’S SO PRETTYYYYY!) LINKS: {on Goodreads} {Amazon} {Barnes & Noble}

And then my “virtual” nightstand because sadly ebooks do not pile prettily…

virtualnightstand2016april

  • Songkeeper by Gillian Bronte Adams – Currently reading this sequel to Orphan’s Song! *squeals* I just started it so I’m not too far in, but it’s already quite enjoyable and exciting and I love the writing, especially the humorous tilt to it when we’re in Amos’ point of view! XD This book is releasing on April 15th, and I’ll have a review for it up by that date! (Fingers crossed that I get it read and reviewed on time…) LINKS: {on Goodreads} {Amazon pre-order}
  • Defying Shadows by Ashley Townsend – I’m excited to beta-read this third installment of the Rising Shadows Trilogy! It’s going to be LONG but it’s going to be worth it. XD That will be releasing sometime soonish. And I’m excited about it because timey-wimey/Robin-Hood-ish/and I need to know what happens with Will and co! LINK: {on Goodreads}

So that’s what I’m going to be (very) busy reading this month! I just hope I will manage to get them all read (on time)! Funny how that likes to happen where you sign up for things and then suddenly they pile up and happen at the same time! 😉 But I can’t really complain because these are all going to be awesome. I just know it! 😀

Do any of these look intriguing or have you read them? What’s on your stand of the night? 😉

March Magics Wrap-up

80d3fd12c2b397b885b4e2f5cc7bf544

(pinterest; reminds me of Tom Lynn from Fire and Hemlock)

March draws to a close… I can’t believe how fast this month swept by! I wish I’d been a bit more organized so that I could participate more deeply in March Magics… but what I did do was so much fun anyway, and I greatly enjoyed the DWJ love throughout the blogosphere! (Terry Pratchett, too, of course… but I’m not (yet) a fan since I haven’t read any, so…)

And since I never did do a post with favorite fan-art, I’ve got some DWJ-ish pics — either fan-art or things that remind me of her books — scattered throughout my wrap-up-post because WHY NOT! (They none of them belong to me; I’m linking back to where I found them on Pinterest.)

As for my experiences of the month, they are as follows… In lists. BECAUSE LISTS.

Posts:

Reading:

  • I did read Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones and greatly enjoyed it! I wanted to review it but haven’t managed that yet… It’s hard to review DWJ books.

  • But other things came up so I have yet to delve into Terry Pratchett’s Guards! Guards! Which is a pity because it would have been the perfect excuse to try my first Pratchett… But I’m still looking forward to it and will definitely read it very soon. 🙂
  • It doesn’t really count because I didn’t listen to the whole thing, but I’ve been hearing smatterings of Enchanted Glass around the house — getting the fam hooked on DWJ; like a boss. 😉 I’ve read it before but it’s fun hearing snatches of it again!
  • I really wanted to do some rereading but didn’t manage it… Next year! (And/or, ya know, the rest of this year… I’m not picky. :P)

Other stuff:

  • I had an absolute BLAST with the Diana Wynne Jones Twitter Party on the 25th. I’d never “been” to a Twitter party before, and couple that with not usually running across people who talk about DWJ and suddenly being swamped with links and reviews and thingsF, and I was basically in book heaven. IT WAS SO FUN! ^_^

  • I also went on a DWJ quote-liking binge on Goodreads. ‘Twas marvelous.
  • And I had SO much fun reading everyone else’s posts/reviews!
  • I had some ideas for some other posts but never did get to them, I’m afraid, and I definitely did not schedule my reading etc. very well this month, but what little I did do was still marvelous fun!
cf3992132278222197b39d276d9abc12

(pinterest; I don’t even know who they’re supposed to be but they look very DWJ-ish to me. Sophie & Howl? Chrestomanci & Millie?)

(If you’ve missed the excitement, do check out the link-up post with all the other awesome posts, and you can find the remains of the twitter party under the hashtags #MarchMagics and #DWJMarch.)

Many thanks to Kristen @ We Be Reading for hosting this magical month of appreciation for Diana Wynne Jones and Terry Pratchett! I absolutely loved it and I’m already looking forward to next March! ^_^

(Next year, I will be PREPARED! >:D)

Happy March Magics, everyone!

Top 12 Books Recently Added to My TBR

TTT

The Broke and the Bookish‘s Top Ten Tuesday prompt of the week: Top Ten Books I’ve Recently Added To My TBR (inspired by Jamie’s New To The Queue posts).

It’s usually top ten, but for myself I’m going just a liiiittle over.

I glanced at my latest books added to my To Be Read list on Goodreads, and there are quite a few intriguing morsels I’ve added lately!

They also have almost all been from recommendations or books people mentioned in blogs and such. This is the time of year when everyone’s posting their lists of favorite books of the year before, etc., so I’ve been gathering a lot more books on my forever growing TBR pile…

ttt3

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

I’ve been wanting to perhaps read some of this famous mystery author, but I never know where to start, so I had once asked someone who mentioned she liked this author which was her favorite. She just got back to me and I promptly added this to my TBR. It sounds like an awesome mystery.

The Floating Admiral by Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, etc.

Blogger and author Kelsey Bryant mentioned this to me recently: a mystery novel where each chapter is written by a different famous mystery author! How cool is that? Now THIS I have to see.

Blood Ties by Hazel B. West

When the author mentioned on Goodreads that she’s having a blogtour for this soon and I read the description, I couldn’t resist adding this to my list. The description starts with: “In an Ireland that mixes high kings, faeries, and modern warriors who drive fast cars, Ciran, a descendant from the famous warrior Fionn Mac Cool…” and that’s all I need to know. SIGN ME UP.

The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde

I noticed this in a summary of 2015 books post by Deborah Dunlevy, and it sounds like so much fun. Definitely want to try it out.

Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett is another author who I hear good things about and never know where to START. So I asked Sarah and she recommended this one and the following one. They sound humorous. Count me in. I love humor and slightly crazy-sounding whimsical fantasy stories. Yes please.

Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

Same story on how I came to add it as above.

ssongbirdThe Silent Songbird by Melanie Dickerson

BECAUSE MELANIE DICKERSON! And this one is coming out this November and will be the final Hagenheim book, and is a Little Mermaid retelling set between The Merchant’s Daughter and The Princess Spy. I saw on Goodreads Shantelle add this and went AAAHH IT’S ON GOODREADS! And instantly clicked “want to read”. Yes. (Because Melanie Dickerson.)

The Map Across Time by C. S. Lakin

Again, Kelsey Bryant listed this on her top reads of last year on her blog. It sounds like a delightful fantasy which I’m itching to get my hands on…

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Cait has been after me (and everyone) forever to read some Maggie Stiefvater… So when I finally saw a review by Lisa Pickle in which she mentioned it has Welsh-ish stuff (and then I read the summary on Goodreads)… yep, had to add it.

Black Spring by Alison Croggon

Jenifer Freitag mentioned this in her list of books she read last year, saying it was recommended her by Mirriam Neal and that it’s like Wuthering Heights but better and with fantasy. I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE. (No, I haven’t actually read Wuthering Heights yet. Shush. I just need it on principal because I like the sound of the “feel”. So. Just pretend I make sense.)

Playing With Fire (Skulduggery Pleasant, #2) by Derek Landy

Because I recently read Scepter of the Ancients, the first Skulduggery Pleasant book, and I’m dying to read more. I need more of that humorous witty banter in my life. (Now I just need to FIND more of these books… Why don’t you have them, library mine??)

The Icarus Hunt by Timothy Zahn

Jenelle Schmidt mentioned this in her list of books she’d want on a deserted island. I’ve only read a few of Zahn’s books (Star Wars ones) and loved them… I promptly looked this up on Goodreads, and as soon as I’d read the summary I added it to my TBR so fast I think I got whiplash. It sounds like a Firefly-esque book, by Timothy Zahn, and basically I just need it right now, okay?

What have you recently added to your TBR? And is it as ever-growing as mine? (I fear it’s a booklover thing…)

Dream away in those pages…!
