Bookish News: November 2019!

Heya friends! Happy November! (And NaNo, to those doing it! *raises hand*)

I probably won’t be blogging much this month, due to trying to write 50,000 words of a novel, but you never know. XD

Meanwhile, here’s a book ishness update, featuring this month’s releases, a free short story, a cover reveal, and what’s been up in my bookish/reading life!

NOVEMBER RELEASES

Here are a handful of books releasing sometime this month that I have to share with you!

  • Burnt Silver (H.A. Titus) — Celtic urban fantasy with fae! This series is on my very-excited to read list. 😀 Currently on preorder.
  • Death Warden (C.J. Stilling) — YA fantasy about a reluctant assassin girl. This is from a Realmie author and sounds really cool. Also, that cover! ❤
  • Head in the Heavens (E.B. Dawson) — AWK! So, this is a collection of all the sci-fi short stories from this author, which I binge-read and shrieked about on my blog earlier this year. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Even though I’m not a huge sci-fi person! They’re now collected in one beautiful anthology which released this last weekend and I’M SO EXCITED! You can find it here!
  • Thirst (Jill Williamson) — Apocalyptic and dystopian stories aren’t my favorite, but look, a new Jill Williamson book! 😀 *cheering* It’s part one of a prequel duology to her Safe Lands series!
  • A Very Bookish Christmas — This is a limited edition anthology of four bookish Christmas novellas from four authors: Sarah Holman, J. Grace Pennington, Rebekah Jones, and Kate Willis. I’ve loved books from all these authors! In this collection, I read Gingerbread Treasures by Rebekah Jones (since I edited it), and it’s an absolutely delightful Holmes-inspired cozy Christmas mystery, with a modern desert town setting and characters I adored. It was utterly charming! Also, the mystery/treasure hunt was SO unique! I’m sure the rest of the stories in the collection are just as fabulous. 🙂 It’s releasing on Thanksgiving, I think, but it’s up for preorder now!
  • Kate’s Christmas (Sarah Holman) — I beta-read this and I LOVE THIS SERIES! Christian FBI mysteries with characters who stole my heart and a good dose of fun mixed in throughout the mysteries and questions of faith. And this one has cozy Christmas parts which make me happy! Releasing on Thanksgiving. (Preorder.)

And the next middle grade superhero novel from Bryan Davis is supposed to come out this month too! It’s not on Goodreads yet but there’s a preorder up on his website. My younger brother and I are really excited to read this one! (Read my review for book one.)

SHORT STORY FREEBIE!

Kyle Robert Shultz has this short story available for free on his newsletter! Check it out!

It features Nick Beasley and Cordelia Beaumont encountering the Afterverse versions of certain Asgardians, including a version of Thor and Loki, who are masquerading as Nick and Cordelia! It’s hilarious and I love it so much. XD

RECENT READS

  • Ghostlight (Rabia Gale) — I mentioned this in my last bookish news but it was sooo good! Regency-esque fantasy, fun and witty but spooky (but just short of too spooky for me), and with characters I ADORED. I’m hooked and can’t wait to read the next book! *bumps it to the top of my wishlist* I had a bit of a book hangover after this one. Ghostlight was the book of the month for my favorite bookclub, Fellowship of Fantasy. ❤
  • Pumpkin Spice Pie-Jinks (Selina J. Eckert) — This novella I edited is the ABSOLUTE ESSENSE of Fall! It’s so cozy and I absolutely adored it, with the magical pies and the dash of Hansel and Gretel and the modern setting mixed with fantasy and the fae prince and the harassed magical baker heroine and a smidge of adorable romance. It just FELT like autumn and was absolutely delicious — plus, it made me want to eat delicious pastries. XD Check it out if you’re a Fall person!
  • Dark is the Night (Mirriam Neal) — *SCREAMING* A new Mirriam Neal book is out! I won’t make you go through all the squawking I did in my review again, but I’m Very Pleased that Skata and Angel’s book is out in the world now! ❤ So much snark, my word. 😀
  • Magician’s Gift (H.L. Burke) — I got to beta-read this delightful short story featuring Jericho and the other characters from the Spellsmith and Carver trilogy! AWK! It was so fun and full of magical shenanigans and a dash of “aww!” and it made me sooo happy to see Jericho, Auric, and Rill again, years after the end of the trilogy! ^_^
  • Strayborn (E.E. Rawls) — This one was SO fun and exciting, and a tiny bit spooky, and adorable, awesome, and totally unique! I had so much fun reading it, and you can check out my review if you missed it!
  • Dancing and Doughnuts (Rachel Kovaciny)This one was my rather small attempt to do something for Twelve Dancing Princesses month (!!!) since that was the fairy tale of the month in October over at The Fairy Tale Central. It was a fun, non-magical, western novella retelling of the 12DP story, which was definitely unique! It also made me want doughnuts. 😛 I had won a copy from the author and finally read it and it made me smile! The only other 12DP thing I did last month was write a flash fiction for a prompt, and I posted it on my other blog. It was so fun but now I want to write a whole book about it! Oh well. At least I did two small things to celebrate my favorite fairy tale! There just was NOT enough time in October!
  • Dear Author: Letters from a Bookish Fangirl (Laura A. Grace) — Scroll down for the cover reveal for this one later in the post! It’s her first book, releasing December 3, and I’m SO EXCITED! I read an ARC of it and it’s short and sweet, fifteen letters to writers/authors (and including ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE illustrations by Hannah S.J. Williams!). I loved it and hope to review it soon. 🙂
  • (Re-read) House of Many Ways (Diana Wynne Jones) — October was stressful, and I went on a short re-read stint since cozy favorite re-reads were how I coped with all the stuff going on. I had a blast re-reading this one (aloud! with the voices!), especially rediscovering Charmain and Peter, and TWINKLE. XD
  • (Re-read) The Boggart (Susan Cooper) — If you haven’t checked out this contemporary fantasy, set in Scotland and modern-day (ish; ’90s, when it was written) Toronto, you are missing out! This was the first time I read the physical book, but I’d listened to the audiobook twice before and I LOVE IT. It’s so much fun and one of a not-very-long-list of modern fantasy I love. I devoured it in an evening, sitting by a campfire, and it was a delight. ^_^
  • Highway Robbery (Kate Thompson) — I actually read this in November, unlike the October books which are all the rest pictured. It was a short, quick read, with illustrations that were half quirky, half realistic (LOVED the horse art! GORGEOUS), and the story was very intriguing though I wanted more of it and wished it’d had somewhat of a different outcome. Still, it was cute. (I got it at a libary sale and ended up reading the whole thing the night of the 1st of NaNo, which says something about how curious I was to know what happened. XD)
  • Not pictured, I also edited or beta-read some books and novellas and short stories — all good! I’ll have to share about them when they’re available. 😀 (Watch out, Afterverse fans! There’s an epic storm coming. *cackles*)

CURRENTLY READING

  • I just started The Scorpio Races, FINALLY. Everyone has been telling me to read this for so many years. XD I keep meaning to read a Maggie Stiefvater book (goodness knows I own like seven of them. XD) and I finally started one. I’m only a few chapters in but it’s very interesting! I figured November is the right time to read it. 😉 We’ll see if I can get through it and also keep up with my writing!
  • I’m really enjoying Strange Waters (Phoenix Fiction Anthology — see my spotlight for more info!) and Mardan’s Anointed (part of the Mardan series I reviewed)! Both are review books and I hope to finish them this month, but we’ll see. I’M EXCITED. ❤

TBR

It’s always dangerous having a To-Be-Read list during November, because between writing a 50K novel, going to writing events, having Thanksgiving, and all the other things life throws my way, I often find myself with no time to read.

But here are some that are up next on my radar!

  • Death Warden — This YA fantasy about an assassin is releasing this month and I have an ARC and it sounds super interesting! Can’t wait to dive in!
  • Sword of Soter — Sequel to Armor of Aletheia (read my review), and I’m suuuper excited to read this one! (Also an ARC. I know, I’m behind on review books!)
  • Green Dolphin Country — Actually, this is also on my currently-reading, I just hadn’t put it on that shelf on Goodreads. XD It’s really interesting so far, just HUGE, so I haven’t had time to finish it yet!
  • Beyond the Shadowed Earth — Releasing in January! I have an ARC and I’m sooo excited to read it (THIS AUTHOR WROTE ECHO NORTH! And Beneath the Haunting Sea! And I love her writing so, so much!), but also nervous because the main character is someone from Beneath the Haunting Sea who I didn’t like. XD But I can’t wait to jump in when I have some time! Possibly not in November, but December for sure if I don’t. 😀

BOOKSTAGRAM: 5 Straight Months, 500 Followers, & Phone Woes

I just hit 500 followers on my bookstagram and I’m so excited!! Thanks to everyone who follows me there! ^_^

I also posted every day on there from June 1 to October 31, five straight months of posting (only skipping one week while I was away for Realm Makers) and I’m pretty excited about that. 😀

However, my phone died and I haven’t gotten the replacement in yet, so I’m currently cameraless, and after I post a couple of books pictures I still have ready, I’ll not be posting on there for a bit. Also, since it’s NaNo, I’m stepping back from posting anyway. XD

So that’s what’s up in my Instagram world!

NANOWRIMO

It’s not super bookish but it is somewhat — even if it’s writing instead of reading. XD As I mentioned, I’m doing NaNoWriMo! I’m writing a secret project under the codename Operation Foxtail, which I shared just a little about on my other blog, here and here.

So that’s what I’ll be busy with for the rest of November! If I’m around less, or don’t read as much, or take awhile to reply to things, it’s just because I’m busy writing! 😉 *hangs sign: Busy Writing a Novel; Will Be Back in December* XD

It’s going well so far — I’m at 5K at the time of writing this (hopefully more when this posts) and having a blast so far! I’m just waiting for it to turn difficult. 😛

If you are doing NaNo as well, I’d love to be buddies over on the site — you can find me here! GOOD LUCK, EVERYONE! YOU’VE GOT THIS! And I hope all of you who are not doing NaNo have a beautiful (and sane) bookish November!

Whew! That’s all the news I have for you today. Anything here you’re excited about? Thanks for reading!

*disappears back to writing and pretends this post wasn’t a full NaNo day’s worth of words, because that’s just awkward since they don’t count toward my goal* XD

Free Afterverse Book! (+ Beaumont and Beasley Series: What’s Up)

Hey, so for those of you out there who are fans of The Beast of Talesend and Kyle Robert Shultz’s other delightful works of hilarious fantasy fiction, I just want to share a sale with you! Because FREE BOOK!

(And to explain what’s up with the Beaumont and Beasley series, in case you’re confused by what this book actually is. XD)

Free: The Hound of Duville and Other Stories (Beaumont and Beasley, #4)

First, link: heeere it is. Free through June 16. Go download it! (Got it? Excellent.)

As the Editor of the Afterverse, I just wanted to give a shout-out!

Another free book

(Oh, and Kyle’s nonfiction book on writing, titled Not Write Now, is free too! It’s perfect if you’re into writing and hilarity and reverse-psychology, because it’s going to totally inspire you in your writing, while telling you NOT to write. It totally works. And chapter 2 even has Nick and Cordelia in it. Just so you know.)

Now, what is this Hound of Duville and Other Stories, you ask?

Once upon a time . . . there was The Beast of Talesend, The Tomb of the Sea Witch, and The Stroke of Eleven. (Click titles for my reviews.) These make up the first three books in the Beaumont and Beasley series, about Beast detective Nick Beasley, his awesome/funny brother Crispin, and the inimitable and eccentric young enchantress Cordelia Beaumont. 1920s magical fairytale retellings. Hilarious. Awesome. And so forth. (There’s a new omnibus edition of the first three if you need to catch up.)

And then there were a smattering of other, smaller stories, released over the last year or two, on various platforms, which are combined as book 4, which is the book that is free this weekend.

The Janus Elixir — a prequel novella of sorts, following fan-favorite archaeologist dragon Malcolm Blackfire (who’s going to have his own series), taking place in the 1800s, with some Jekyll-and-Hyde shenanigans.

The Hound of Duville — occurs a few months after The Stroke of Eleven (book 3), and is a novella featuring Nick and Crispin and a doggy curse.

These were published individually, then combined into The Return of Beaumont and Beasley, labeled book 4.

This has now been re-released under the title The Hound of Duville and Other Stories (as Beaumont and Beasley, #4), with these two novellas and the new addition of three other short stories, to make it more of an anthology.

All three short stories feature the Beaumont and Beasley characters, take place after book 3, and are:

  1. A Spoonful of Aether — Short story with a Mary Poppins vibes. Features Cordelia being awesome. (Was released as a newsletter exclusive.)
  2. My Man Beasley — Basically a P.G. Wodehouse/Bertie Wooster mashup with Tam Lin. (Was only available to Patreon readers before now.)
  3. One Flew Over the Gryphon’s Nest — Told in the form of transcripts from interview sessions with the Beaumont and Beasley characters at an insane asylum (and yes, it’s as hilarious and intense as it sounds. XD). Also a Patreon story.

Got it? Two novellas, three short stories, all awesome, all in one collection, which is free through June 16. You MAY have read some of them in various forms over time, so I just wanted y’all to know about all this! You can read Kyle’s post here, but he wanted to put it up for free for a few days due to some people perhaps already having other versions. (And the new paperback is also discounted.)

Also, book 5 is coming, promise! It’s called The Geppetto Codex and will be out later this year.

In the meantime, the next Afterverse book is Deadwood (magical wild-west spinoff series Crockett and Crane, #2), releasing June 30 and up for pre-order!

OKAY. I think that’s all you need to know. I hope you found this Afterverse recap/update helpful — or at least the freebie sales. XD Enjoy!

Disclaimer: I edited these books, which might mean I’m slightly biased when I say that they’re totally awesome, but I assure you this is not the case. … It’s not the case that I’m biased, I mean. They ARE totally awesome.

Book Ishness + 200 Posts! (June 2019)

I’m back from hiatus! *happy dance*

And I just realized that my most recent post was my 200th post on the Page Dreamer! HURRAH!

*throws confetti and passes out virtual cupcakes*

200 is a pretty cool number, I feel. 😀

Thanks, as always, for reading and supporting my little bookish rambles and reviews, my dear Pagelings! Y’all are the best! ❤

Onward to the bookish news and releases, free books and cover reveals, and what I’ve been reading while I was on hiatus! (It was a good reading month! ^_^)

NEW RELEASES

Urban fantasy, urban fantasy, fairytale retelling, Arthurian retelling, steampunk, dystopian. (Respectively.)

SOME PEOPLE write way too fast (okay, there’s no such thing. XD), and I can’t keep up with all their new books and need to catch up, but look! Shinies!

Some came out last month and others are arriving sometime this June. Click the titles below to read more on Goodeads if any intrigue you . . .

Wish You Weren’t Here (Janeen Ippolito) • Between Frames (W.R. Gingell) • The Matchgirl and the Magician (L. Palmer) • The Heir of Logres (Suzannah Rowntree) • Heart of the Curiosity (H.L. Burke) • Irrelevant (Sarah Addison-Fox)

Deadwood, the sequel to Horseman (Crockett and Crane, book 1) is coming out at the end of the month as well!

Oh, yes, this one is almost here! As the Editor of the Afterverse, I’m excited to say that you don’t have much longer to wait for the further adventures of part-time centaur Todd Crane, ex-Marshal Amy Crockett, and Julio the dragon, in the magical wild west of the United States of Neverica. *grins*

It’s not on Goodreads yet, but here’s the Amazon preorder link if you want to know more! Kyle Shultz and I are finishing up the final edits on this one, and I’m really excited for y’all to read it. 😀

Official release date is June 30. (And book 1 is free! Details below.)

Free Ebooks

Horseman by Kyle Robert Shultz is free just through today (June 3!) so be sure to pick up the ebook of that if you don’t have it yet!

Book 2, Deadwood, is coming soon, so now is the perfect time to read this one if you haven’t!

And if you want more fun, you can join the Fellowship of Fantasy Bookclub over on Facebook to read it this month, since Horseman is book of the month for June!

This super-power-ish short story by E.B. Dawson is free through June 4 so be sure to pick up your Kindle copy! (I’m planning to review a bunch of sci-fi short stories by this talented author next week, but I had to share this one while the sale was running!)

OTHER NEWS

Alliance Award Voting — Final Round!

There’s still time to vote on the Alliance Awards, reader-based fan awards run by Realm Makers — so if you’ve read Fawkes, Mark of the Raven, The Story Peddler, or any combination of the three, hurry and get your vote in before June 4 at midnight PST!

Sci-fi Fairy Tale Retellings — Kickstarter

There’s a campaign (through June 22) to help fund an upcoming collection called Once Upon a Future Time (Volume 2), and it features at least one story that I know is awesome — Beast in the Machine, a sci-fi retelling by E.B. Dawson! There’s also a story by our very own Savannah Grace, as well as tales by Shannon McDermott and several other authors. If this sounds of interest to you, be sure to check it out and spread the word if you can! 🙂

Other than that, I’m a bit out of the loop since I was mostly on internet hiatus for the last month, but here, have some pretty covers!

Cover Reveals

I know you probably saw this one when I shared it and related info a couple weeks ago, but LOOK AT IT AGAIN BECAUSE IT’S EPIC. 😀 (Also, it’s now on Goodreads!)

EEP! I love the blue on this one! So shiny! And I’m always up for a Cinderella retelling. 😀 Check it out.

I know I shared this one in the list of new releases coming this June, but I had to share it again! And steampunk! I’m excited! 😀

HIATUS END + READING NEWS

I had a lovely month of reading during my hiatus, and found myself actually reading one book at a time, focusing, reading straight through, and then starting another. I’m so proud of myself for not being all scattered and trying to read half a dozen books at once, which doesn’t always work so well. XD

I also found myself with a bit of extra reading time, due to my social media hiatus, which was lovely!

And as much as I love Goodreads, reading felt like a lot less pressure when I wasn’t tracking my reading on there. 😛 *cough*

I also OFFICIALLY CAUGHT UP ON READING ALL MY REVIEW BOOKS so I’m sort of ecstatic about that.

It was a quite successful reading month, overall!

MAY READS

Oh, look, I passed my reading goal for the year! (In my defense, I do count short stories, which is why the number is so high. XD)

For more details on any of these, you can find links to them on my Goodreads reading challenge.

  • Flower of the Underworld – Hazel B. West — Super-enjoyable urban fantasy. I just had so much fun reading this! And I loved Hades and Persephone and their friends and all the shenanigans, and the mix of Greek myth and modern times, in a totally unique way. (I may have promptly named a plant George after the plant Persephone gave Hades. XD)
  • In the Shadow of Croft Towers – Abigail Wilson — Secrets, spies, highwaymen, a mysterious mansion, and a smidge of romance, all tied up in the Regency era. It’s a Regency romance/murder mystery and the combination was super cool! You can read my review here if you missed it.
  • Flight of the Raven (Ravenwood Saga, #2) – Morgan L. Busse — Review coming tomorrow on my other blog as part of the blog tour, but I ADORED this one! 😀
  • Friday’s Child – Georgette Heyer — Oh, man. XD I hadn’t read a Heyer book in far too long and almost forgot how hilarious and full of shenanigans they are. I had such a blast reading it that I stayed up until 1 a.m. and only went to bed under the veriest protest, and then was absolutely useless all the next day until I finished the last page. 😛
  • Castle in the Air – Diana Wynne Jones — I re-read this aloud to the younger siblings and had the absolute best time re-visiting Abdullah and the soldier and the cats he’s besotted with, and of course the genie and magic carpet. XD SO fun, and the cameos of people from Howl’s Moving Castle, including Howl and Sophie, just make the book. ❤
  • Battle for the Throne – E.J. Willis — A bit bloody for my taste but definitely had its moments! This was an intriguing YA Christian fantasy about a lost princess and included gladiators, giants, and winged-wolf-spirit-guardians! I’ll be reviewing it later too. 🙂
  • Mardan’s Mark, Mardan’s Heir, Healer’s Curse, and Pirate Wager – Kathrese McKee — I sort of binge-read these and LOVED them! Pirates, princesses, missing heirs, friendship and romance, siblings and survival and adventure and politics. Watch for my series review post, coming soon!

Not Pictured

  • How to Be a Savage – Daley Downing (coming soon!) — A short collection from the author of the Order of the Twelve Tribes series, I edited this one and it’s coming soon! Super enjoyable!
  • Pseudonym (Dana Illwind and Sorcerer Lord Jayden short story) – Arthur Daigle — I’ve mentioned . . . these short stories . . . before, but every time a new one pops up online it makes my WEEK and I devour it at once. I can’t get enough of these delightful characters! Jayden and Dana are my FAVORITE. ❤

JUNE PLANS

I have a handful of review posts planned for this month, since I did so much catching up on review books, so watch out for those!

I’m not sure exactly what my “nightstand” TBR pile for June will be, but it has occurred to me I should probably take this opportunity to tackle at least a few Realm Makers books before I go to the conference in July. XD

We’ll see what the month brings!

How was your May? I missed you guys! What was your favorite book you read while I was gone? And do any of these books intrigue you? Thanks for reading, and HI AGAIN! ❤

King’s Ward by E. Kaiser Writes: Book Spotlight!

Hey guys! I just wanted to let you know about a new book by a lovely author friend of mine, which just released this last weekend! It’s called King’s Ward and while I haven’t read it yet, I’ve enjoyed her books and I’m excited for it!

If you like non-magical fantasy adventure, you’ll love these. ^_^

You can check out the blog tour, and also be sure to go enter the giveaway. 😀

Check out these loverly new covers for the books in the series — and the first book is free right now! 😉

Jeweler’s Apprentice
Five Gems Book 1
by E. Kaiser Writes
Genre: YA Fantasy Adventure
On her first visit to the palace, sixteen-year-old Fia stumbles upon a court intrigue. To keep the secret safe, the Chancellor sends her off as apprentice to a famous, reclusive, mountain jeweler…
…And straight into adventure.
Discovering gems with deep secrets and new friends with the same, Fia learns a whole lot more than just making jewelry: when to trust a stranger, and when not to, why not to try stealing from gem thieves; what heroism is; what royalty ought to be; and that the mountains themselves can sometimes be the greatest danger of all.
Is the legend of the Sunlight Stone true?
Will peace ever come to the war-torn neighboring kingdom?
And what is the stable boy hiding…?

Traitor’s Knife
Five Gems Book 2
Secrets. Sabotage. Murder. With Olayin House temporarily turned into a weapons factory, Fia is confronted with the care of three refugee children, an ill-timed visitor, a perplexingly brash messenger that she isn’t quite sure what to think of, all while trying to keep her friend’s secrets safe. But when dangerous accidents start to happen, the young apprentice begins to tread a fine line of suspicion. Are saboteurs out to nix the weapons works… and is the incognito crown prince in mortal peril? Winter in the mountain house isn’t as cozy as her apprenticeship was expected to be.
**Only .99 cents!**

New Release!

King’s Ward
Five Gems Book 3
With her wealth of loyalist secrets, Fia’s position at Olayin House is compromised. Now a potential danger to two countries, she is made a ward of the king and sent away yet again; this time into the grassland kingdom of Erlandia, but her journey amongst the horse folk takes unexpected turns.
Trapped under siege, she faces two men from her past… one she fears might murder her, and the other may die of plague unless she wins the battle for his life.
And with the Sunlight Stone traded for troops, how long will Erlandia’s peace last?

E. Kaiser Writes was born into a family of readers, and got started on storytelling around the age of four when her older siblings prompted her into recounting an absolutely ridiculous account of a parallel childhood. It was good for the family’s general entertainment, and she discovered the thrill of making people laugh.
At the age of seven her mother read the Hobbit aloud, and a fascination with beautiful fantasy was born. At nine she came to the decision that she wanted to be a writer, and set to reading rabidly to learn the art. At thirteen she attempted her first novel, and it was eaten in a computer’s demise.
Afterward, during her teenage years she tried very hard at various times to stop writing all together.
Not succeeding, she at last gave in to her addiction, and wrote “for fun”.
Her first novel, Jeweler’s Apprentice, is a light-fantasy adventure for teens. The shy, bookish heroine is thrust out on the first step toward the adventure that awaits, and growing up. More books in this series are expected.
