Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

Author: Jane Austen

review

I’m in a bit of a conundrum, as it’s perhaps a 3-star book, but Henry Tilney is by all means a thoroughly 5-star fellow… So my 4-stars is an (unsatisfactory, no doubt, to all parties…) attempt at consolidating the two thoughts…

I read this for the Northanger Abbey Read-Along held by Amber Stokes @ Seasons of Humility, and I’m so glad I did! (Of course, I had been quite diligently reading a chapter per day, give or take; but quite failed in drawing it out over the last few days and had to finish early. ;))

My general lack of patience with (read: loathing for) Isabella, Mr. Thorpe, and at points General Tilney, coupled with poor Catherine’s being rather trodden upon in “friendship” with the poisonous lacy cupcake known as Isabella, prevented my specifically “enjoying” most of the story. I can’t really read about characters being used in that way, or about nasty people, without my blood boiling and ending up greatly disliking it. It’s just a kind of story I can’t read, personally. Definitely a case of “it’s not you, it’s me.” (Unfortunately, this accounts for most of the book?)

But every instance which involved Mr. Tilney, as well as those parts with him and Catherine and Eleanor Tilney as a trio, were a delight and well worth the reading!

Tilney must rank up there with my favorite of the Austen heroes, methinks, following after Mr. Darcy but for quite different reasons! Henry is a delightful character, I loved his lines of wit and humor, and the part where he was frightening Catherine with his fabricated tales of horror concerning her arrival to the abbey, was hilarious. XD

Henry and Catherine make a sweet pair, and adding in Eleanor, make a very delightful set of companions, whom it would be a joy to hang out with!

The bits that were rather making fun of other books, which was fun, and Tilney (and his sister), make the book worth reading, and I’m quite glad to have (at long last!) read Northanger Abbey. 🙂

Now I need to reread Pride and Prejudice sometime, and I now really hope that Amber Stokes @ Seasons of Humility will hold another readalong for Emma or Mansfield Park someday so I can finally read those too, because I really like this readalong format. 😀

I’m just going to leave you with this fabulous quote from Henry which is further proof of his awesomeness. He and I would get along splendidly. XD

“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” — Henry Tilney, Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

(Hey, he said it, not me. ;))

(I quite apologize if all that comes out of this attempted review is that Tilney is awesome; I’m afraid I’m shallow like that. *cough*)

    • He is! He’s a PLAYFUL, cheerful type of hero, which is the first I’ve seen in Jane Austen’s work. 😀 It’s very different… Yes, S&S is pretty good! Pride & Prejudice is my favorite, and Persuasion’s good too. 🙂

  1. I admire you for reading this! I always mean to read more Jane Austen but neeeever get around to it. It daunts me, and yet when I DO read her books I end up enjoying them. They’re just slower, heavier reads so I tend to put them off. Shameful.

Anyways! I’m glad this one had at least one epic character to make it all worth it. Jane Austen does seem to write the best heroes. Such as Mr. Darcy, obviously. But I also LOVE Mr. Knightley from Emma (even though I’ve never read the book, just seen a mini series of it). Sounds like Mr. Tilney goes right up there with them.

    • I always mean to and don’t get around to it very often, so I understand. XD But this one is I think the shortest of her novels! So it might not daunt you as much. 🙂 And I kind of have a feeling you might even like it more than I did? I dunno… But yes, I put them off, and then enjoy them when I do. XD

YES! Hurray for Austen heroes! I’ve only seen Knightly on screen myself (and it was a movie, not a mini-series, so it must have been even a different Knightly. XD) so I have a feeling I’ll like him in book form. And Darcy AAAALL the way! 😀 The funny thing is that Tilney is awesome, but in a totally different way… because he’s much more friendly and funloving than any of the others, I think…

  3. ISABELLA IS SO ANNOYING. SHE’S THE ABSOLUTE WORST. But I loooove the Eleanor/Henry/Catherine trio. So so great.

I liked Henry but he wasn’t my fave hero … YOU HAVE TO READ EMMA. Hero and a HALF I’m just saying. That’s my fave Austen book, I love it forever and ever and ever. What I really love about Northanger Abbey is its almost metafictional aspects, in that it’s really a book about reading. (I felt that the book was more about Catherine finding her identity than it was about Henry. But I don’t think Austen could ever resist a romance thread with a good-looking chap!) I loved all the bits where Catherine was trying to think how a “heroine” would behave; Austen was definitely poking gentle fun at traditional heroines, but she was also defending women characters, women writers and women readers. It’s Catherine’s mum, isn’t it, who has a massive thing against women writers? I JUST LOVED ALL THESE THEMES OF READING AND WRITING. Books about books are the best.

PS I’ve given you a follow, because I love Road to a Writer, so it’s only natural I hang out here too!

    • YES. I’M GLAD YOU AGREE. They’re a great trio though. ^_^

Yep, my favorite hero so far is Darcy, and I’ve heard GREAT things about Knightly, so I’m really excited to read Emma. 😀 I AGREE! The metafiction parts of Northanger Abbey were so neat. 🙂 Haha, yeah, I guess she couldn’t resist a bit of romance in there. 😉 Not that I’m complaining. XD I thought Catherine and Henry were cute together. But YES, yay for books about books!

Oh yay, thank you, Emily! 🙂 So glad you enjoy my li’l blogs — you made my day! ^_^

  4. I also love Northanger Abbey, mainly because of Henry! Such a great character, and he’s definitely up there with my Austen favourites. I agree with you about the other characters, particularly the Thorpes. Not sure about you, but the part when they drove past Henry in the carriage wound me up beyond belief!
